William (Bill) A. Isaacson

LINDENHURST — William (Bill) A. Isaacson, 88, of Lindenhurst, passed away Sunday, Dec.16, 2012.

He was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Danville to Adlie Victor Isaacson and Lillian Sandburg Isaacson.

He moved to Champaign in 1939 where he graduated from Champaign High School. He attended the University of Illinois before entering the U.S. Army in 1943 and also after World War II. He served in World War II with the 1st Brigade 531st Amphibious Engineering Unit, including the Invasion of Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, and the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. He transferred to a new unit in May ’45 and in July ’45 was transported to the Philippines from the Strait of Gibraltar through the Panama Canal. He returned to the U.S. in December ’45 to San Francisco. He was recalled September ’50 for the Korean Conflict and was discharged May 1952.

Bill was married June 6, 1948, to Winifred Halls in Danville. He was a resident of Waukegan for 50 years before moving to the Village at Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst in September 1998.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of all boards. He coached the church softball team for many years. Bill retired from Abbott Laboratory after 40 years. He played softball with the Abbott Leagues for 50 years.

He squaredanced with the Swinging Swedes, Saints and Swingers and camped with Little Fort Campers and Chuck Wagon Squares. He was an associate member of the Swedish Glee Club for 30 years. He traveled over much of the U.S., enjoyed 12 winters in Arizona and volunteered at Victory Hospital for 28 years.

The highlights of his retirement years were: trips to Sweden to visit cousins, trip to France in 1994 to participate in the ceremonies of the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach, an Honor Flight July 2011 to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and being chosen as the grand marshall of the Lindenfest Parade 2012.

Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wini; son, Kent (Cindi) Isaacson; daughter, Karen (Chuck) Boehm; grandchildren, Karl (Melanie) Boehm, Chris Boehm, Danielle (Branden) Hedberg and Drew Isaacson; great-grandchildren, Michael and Brooklynn Hedberg and Charlotte Boehm; nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lillian Bennett.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, with service following at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 122 N. Martin Luther King Jr., Waukegan. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery.
