Gwendolyn Delores Murray Battle

DANVILLE — Gwendolyn Delores Murray Battle, age 82 years young at heart, passed this life Feb. 22, 2013, at Kindred Lakeshore Hospital in Chicago.

Gwendolyn Delores was the eldest child of Edward Murray and Margurite Hines Murray.

At an early age, Delores was baptized at Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Danville by the Rev. Pitman.

She united in holy matrimony to Elmore Battle Sr. He preceded her in death.

Affectionately called “Granny” by many, Delores devoted her life to helping others. She was active in raising children via the foster care system program, taking in countless youth and treating them as her own. Gwendolyn was an avid reader; she enjoyed reading “true stories,” watching BET, listening to music and watching various other television shows. Her favorite hobby was rearranging furniture and maintaining a spotless home.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Jacqueline (Willie) Briggs, Danita (Eric) Keys and Delores Ann Battle; and a son, Gregory Allen Battle; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who all loved her dearly.

Gwendolyn was preceded in death by both parents; her four siblings, Edward Nathaniel Murray (Junie) Jr., Walter Richard Murray (Rickie), Margurite Murray and Marquete Murray; and two children, Elmore Battle Jr. and Darlene Murray Williams.

The home-going service for Gwendolyn Delores will begin at noon Monday, March 4, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Eulogist: Elder Lee Reed. Place of interment: Spring Hill Cemetery. Leek and Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., is in charge of arrangements.
