CHAMPAIGN —
Dorothea A. Blue, 92, of Champaign, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital, after suffering a stroke a week earlier.
Born Oct. 8, 1920, in Oakwood to George W. and Cora Ann Jones Lomax, she attended Webster, a one-room school, before attending Oakwood High School, graduating in the Class of 1938. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois, graduating with advanced degrees in the School of Administration in 1960.
Mrs. Blue taught school for 35 years in Oakwood and Sidell grade schools and Champaign Unit 4 Schools, at Col. Wolfe, Westview and Edison Middle School. After retiring in 1981, she operated Blue’s Mowing Equipment Service.
She married Ken A. Blue on Oct. 9, 1961. They were happily married for 51 years. He survives.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter by a previous marriage, Virginia Ann Long; three sisters, Arizona Montgomery, Lillian McQuown and Virginia Cushwa; and two brothers, Alpheus and George Lomax Jr.
Mrs. Blue had many interests, chief among them were the students she taught and mentored through the years. She also loved playing the piano, art, poetry, reading, nature, wild animals and birds. But, most of all, she loved teaching.
For the last 15 years she and Ken enjoyed traveling – 10 years of going to Mexico and the last five years in Florida.
As per her wishes, her body was donated to medical science. There will be no services. At a later date, her ashes will be interred at Stearns Cemetery, Fithian.
Donations may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy, is handling arrangements.
