DANVILLE — Betty Marie Switzer, 91, of Danville passed away at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center after a short illness.

Betty is survived by a sister, Billie Wahlfeldt; several nieces and one nephew, Nancy Coffer of Atlanta, Ga., Linda Wahlfeldt of Danville, Patricia (James) Sheehan of Danville, Sandy (Tom) Young of Fort Myers, Fla., Ron Chapman of Marysville, Ohio, Judy (Bill) Wical of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Deanna (Roger) Shumway of Raymond, Ohio, and Becky (Gene) Drumm, Bellefontaine, Ohio. Her daughter, Janice, preceded her in death.

The family wishes to thank Lee Diveley and Dale Salonen for their special help during Betty’s last years.

Betty loved to play cards, work crossword puzzles, needlepoint and read voraciously. She was a passionate volunteer for many years. She served on the Salvation Army Board, was a Brownie Scout leader, Girl Scout trainer leader, worked on the United Way campaigns and volunteered for many years at the Lakeview Hospital gift shop.

Betty holds a special place in the hearts of the membership of her beloved Danville Boat Club. She served on the club’s board for many years and at a time when club rules allowed only men to serve. The club later expressed its appreciation by designating her a Honorary Commodore. She remains the sole recipient of this unique and special honor.

A celebration of Betty’s life will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Boat Club. It was Betty’s wish that memorials be forwarded to the Boat Club’s Scholarship Fund at 15750 Boat Club Road, Danville, IL, 61834. The fund supports qualified college-bound club employees.
