Mary Ellen Bolton

DANVILLE — Mary Ellen Bolton, 87, of Danville, passed away on Sept. 3, 2010, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center.

She was born on April 7, 1923, in Danville, the daughter of Daniel and Carrie (Roberts) Shouse. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Joseph Shouse.

Mary Ellen was an honor graduate of Danville High School and Brown’s Business College. She retired from Prudential Insurance in 1978 after 35 years as an underwriter. After retirement, Mary Ellen worked part time at Marie’s Carpet Manor and devoted her efforts during the next 35 years volunteering for various organizations including St. Elizabeth Hospital, Meals on Wheels, Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Holy Family Church and the Vermilion Manor Nursing Home. Mary Ellen was instrumental in creating the Vermilion Manor Nursing Home Auxiliary in 1981 and was named Vermilion County’s Outstanding Senior Volunteer in 2004. She was affectionately known as “the cookie lady,” baking about 300 cookies each week to sell as a fundraiser for the nursing home. She always put others first and enjoyed helping those less fortunate.

Mary Ellen was a 52-year member of Lambda Tau Delta Sorority, a philanthropic organization and a life member of Holy Family Church.

A wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law, she treasured spending time with her family. Mary Ellen married Stanley Bolton on February 15, 1947, at Holy Family Church in Danville. The two celebrated 63 years of marriage this year. Survivors include her husband Stanley; a daughter, Sue (Pat) O’Neil; two sons, Dan (Linda) Bolton and John Bolton; four grandchildren, Scott (Cathy) O’Neil, Stacie (Jeff) Nevins, Dr. Brian Bolton and Doug (Katie) Bolton; five great-grandchildren, Brandon and Joe Frase, Jack, Caden and Ruby Nevins.
