Mary Etta Adams

CATLIN — Mary Etta Adams, 89, of Catlin passed peacefully into heaven at 4:28 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.

Mary Etta was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Sharpsville, Ind., the daughter of Fred and Artie Duncan Wyrick. On June 26, 1945 she was married to her high school sweetheart, Frank E. Adams. He preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 2010.

Surviving are her daughters, Jan Adams and Judy (Garry) Henthorn; two grandsons, Nicholas and Mitchell Henthorn of Champaign; a granddaughter, Stephanie Gabel and great-granddaughter Veronica of Urbana. Also surviving are Mary Etta’s brothers, John (Virginia) Wyrick of Sharpsville, Ind., and Wayne (Helen) Wyrick of Kokomo, Ind., and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Thelma (Glen) McGraw, Marion, Ind., Bessie (Gene) Lacy, Sharpsville, Ind., and June (Hershel) Troyer, Kokomo, Ind.

Mary Etta was a loving homemaker whose interests were her family, church and community. She happily cared for and nurtured her family, enjoying cooking, sewing clothing for her daughters, leading a Girl Scout troop and traveling. She lived in several Illinois communities following WWII and Frank’s graduation from Indiana State University with a degree in education. In 1967, they settled in Catlin, where Frank taught English and rhetoric at Danville Area Community College. Mary Etta and Frank were active members of Catlin United Methodist Church. Health reasons prompted their move in 2004 to Canterbury Ridge Assisted Living in Urbana. In 2009, Mary Etta needed additional care and the couple moved to Amber Glen Alzheimer Care Center in Urbana. Near the end of life, Mary Etta moved to Bickford Cottage Memory Care Center of Champaign, where she received loving care, with assistance of Carle Hospice. All of the people involved in her care in recent years have been very special.

Private family graveside rites will be held at Oakridge Cemetery in Catlin. Robison Chapel in Catlin is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made in Mary Etta’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Robison Chapel.
