HOOPESTON — Paul D. Eckert Sr., of Hoopeston, died at 10:37 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at his home.

Born June 24, 1932, in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of Chester and Rachel (Worley) Eckert.

He married Betty L. Hopkins on Feb. 27, 1955, in Hoopeston. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Danny (Pat) Eckert of Grand Rapids, Mich.; one daughter, Diane (Terry) Field of Wellington, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jan, A.J., Tye, Mandy and Travis; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucina Haubert of Marion, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Mr. Eckert served in the U.S. Air Force.

Paul had worked at the A&P Food Store in Hoopeston for 20 years. He then worked and retired from the American Can Company in Hoopeston after 19 years. After retiring, he and his wife Betty owned and operated Eckert’s Root Beer Stand in Hoopeston for five years.

Paul was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Hoopeston.

He enjoyed any kind of woodworking. He loved any sports involving the Ohio State Buckeyes or the Hoopeston Cornjerkers. He also was an avid Cardinals and Bears fan.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Eckert will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Brown-Alkire Funeral Home, 309 E. Washington St., Hoopeston. The Rev. Robert Killion will officiate. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery at Hoopeston. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Carle Hospice.
