Cecil Carl Harris

HOMER — Cecil Carl Harris, 83, of Homer, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral service and Masonic services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Kirby Funeral Home, 708 S. Main St., Homer. Pastor Michael Vernatt, “his grandson,” officiating. Visitation: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Harris was born Feb. 8, 1929, in White Oak, W.V., a son of Fratie Carl and Mildred Miller Harris.

He is survived by his special companion, Shirley L. Taylor; three daughters, Cecilia Ann (Thomas) Bucklin of Fishersville, Va., June “Penny” (Steven) Bostic of White Oak, W.V., and Luanne (William) Nanneman of Moberly, Mo.; two sisters, Betty Seder of Pittsburg, Pa., and Dixie Masley of St. Albens, W.V.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and special friends, including Wayne Mitchell, Tim Ingram and John Pierce. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Carla Sue Harris; a grandson, Cecil Long; a half-brother, David Miller; two brothers, Ernest and Bobby Harris; and seven sisters, Maxine Smith, Mae Taylor, June Leitz, Ruth Shave, Mary Worley, Kitty Harris and Patty Vest.

Mr. Harris served in the US Army. He was a mechanic who owned his own shop and was a heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of Shady Spring First Baptist Church in West Virginia. He was an avid antique collector of cars and avid gardener. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a 50-year member of the Homer Masonic Lodge and was a district deputy of Masons for three years. He was a member of the Homer American Legion, Homer Fire Department, The Pollywog Fishing Club and the Illiana Car Club of Danville.

Memorials made be made to the Homer Fire and Rescue.
