Zean 'Paul' Smalley Jr.

Zean “Paul” Smalley Jr., 83, of Tilton passed away at 6:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at North Logan Health Care in Danville.

He was born Oct. 26, 1929, to Zean Paul Sr. and Esther Belle (Verden) Smalley in Danville. Paul married Priscilla Hinckle on Nov. 22, 1950, in Danville; she survives.

Other survivors include his sons, Alan (Connie) Smalley and Paul Smalley of Tilton; daughters, Mary Ann (Brad) Cade of Tilton and Holly Mathews of Danville; grandson, Neil Russell (Shanna) Mathews; great-grandchildren, Bianca Genevieve and Landen Zean; and his aunt, Mildred Verden.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mary Ileana, Helen Leanna, and Janet Lee.

A graduate of Danville High School, Paul proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. After leaving the service, he returned home to his family and worked as a fireworks supervisor and a truck driver.

Paul enjoyed animals, especially his dog Buttons; watching old westerns that starred John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Alan Ladd; attending air shows; and spending countless hours keeping his yard tidy.

Paul will be remembered as a man who loved his family and took great pride in his grandson and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville with Pastor Jim Blue officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Danville. Military honors will be performed by the Catlin American Legion Post 776. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville.

Memorials may be made in Paul’s name to the Vermilion County Animal Shelter. Condolences may be left at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com
