Lanie L. "Jake" Johnson

INDIANOLA — Lanie L. "Jake" Johnson, 84, of Indianola, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

He was born May 2, 1925, in Humrick, Ill., the son of the late Willie and Carrie Mullins Johnson. He first married Dora Esther Mack on Oct. 31, 1942. She preceded him in death on June 24, 1998. He later married Dorothy Griffin on May 28, 2000. She survives.

Other survivors include his children, Esther Jean (Dave) Dodson of Newport, Ind., Carol Elaine (Danny) Fannin of Louisa, Ky., Jerry (Sharon) Johnson of Danville, Lanie (Karen Kay) Johnson Jr. of Bloomingdale, Ind., and Ronald (Karen May) Johnson of Kingman, Ind.; two step-sons, Mike (Tammy) Griffin of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Rick (Lynn Newman) Griffin of Tangier, Ind.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Imogene "Sis" Johnson Collom of Georgetown; daughter-in-law, Penny Johnson of Kentucky; and son-in-law, Lee Griffin of Sidell. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sondra Griffin; three sons, David, William and Terry; one sister, Dorothy Johnson Nevels; one brother; and a sister-in-law, Marvin (Bernice) Johnson.

Jake was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the Operating Engineers Local 841 in Danville. He was a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Army. Jake also was a member of the Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post 263. He was a 1942 graduate of Ridge Farm High School. Jake enjoyed playing music, wood working and spending time with his family and dog, Lady.

Visitation: 3-5 p.m. (Indiana time) Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Ind. Cremation following visitation is scheduled with burial of cremains to be held at a later date.
