Gayle Marie Fortner, 66, of Gessie, Ind., died at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Carle Foundation Hospital. She was born April 26, 1943, at Danville, the daughter of the late Donald P. and Ruby Kiger Dickerson.
She was a Certified Nurses Aide for many years at St. Elizabeth Hospital and various area nursing homes, last working at Hawthorne Inn. Gayle enjoyed her grandchildren, Indianapolis Colts and NASCAR. She moved to Gessie in 1968 from Danville.
Gayle married Carl L. Fortner April 15, 1965, at Danville. He survives with four children, Patti Elliott of Hagerstown, Md., Donna (Kevin) Watkins of Danville, Tamara (Robin) Bruno of Pinellas Park, Fla., Troy (Stephanie) Fortner of Hohenwald, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, Melody Fortner, Clara (Don) Bernardi, Paul (Fern) Fortner, Orville (Jeanne) Fortner, Meda (Dennis) Winslow, Hazel (Jay) Barr and Mona (Matt) Beckelhymer.
Funeral services will be
2 p.m. EST Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at Shelby Funeral Home, Rev. Charles Strebin officiating. Burial will follow in Lower Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society with envelopes available at Shelby Funeral Home.
