HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. —
Helen Louise Hawkins passed from this life on her 98th birthday on Sept. 6, 2010, in Heber Springs, Ark.
She passed peacefully with her two beloved granddaughters, Katie and Janie, by her side.
Helen was born to Doyle and Nora Guthrie in Newberry, Ind., on Sept. 6, 1912. Her family later moved to Terre Haute, Ind., and then to Danville, where she attended Danville High School.
She married Melvin Hugh “Bud” Hawkins on Jan. 28, 1935, and had two cherished sons, Tom and Jim. They were married for 42 years prior to Bud’s passing in 1977. They enjoyed frequent trips to Canada and Hot Springs, Ark. Helen moved to College Station, Texas, in her later years to live with her son, Tom, and his wife, Jane and subsequently settled in the beautiful resort community of Heber Springs, Ark.
Helen was a skilled homemaker and beloved grandmother who had a love for gardening, baking, traveling and especially spending time with her granddaughters. She was a life member of the Roselawn Garden Club and Danville Woman’s Club and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
As a member of The Wo-man’s Club of Danville since 1947, she served as chairperson of the Conservation and Garden Department. She also was selected Club Mother and was often asked for advice from the younger members.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings.
She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Hugh (Jane) Hawkins of Drasco, Ark., and James Melvin (Barbara) Hawkins of Lebanon, Ind. Also surviving are her granddaughters, Katie (Jeffrey) Harvey of Livonia, N.Y., and Janie (Lance) Hoffman of Bonsall, Calif.; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hawkins Flynn of Danville.
A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville.
Memorials in Helen’s memory may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Condolences may be sent to the family online at Janie@MammaChia.com.
