Richard Dewayne Hancock

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Richard Dewayne Hancock, 87, of Veedersburg, passed away at 1:35 a.m. EST Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, in Woodland Manor Nursing Home at Attica, Ind.

Richard, better known as “Cappy,” was born on Dec. 2, 1925, to Jeffrey and Josephine Hancock.

Cappy graduated from Veedersburg High School. While in high school, hard work paid off in the sport of baseball with a reputation as a fantastic pitcher. These baseball skills allowed him to be drafted into Minor League Baseball with a Birmingham affiliate. His country came first and required his service into World War II, eventually ending a chance at the major leagues.

Cappy married the late Margaret Louise Dice on May 10, 1944, in Covington. She passed away on June 30, 1995. Her sister, Dorothy Dice, survives.

He is survived by a daughter, Marsha Smith; son-in-law, Curtis; grandsons Patrick and Chad; and great-grandchildren, Dakota, Allie, Caleb, Collin, Emory and Chandler Smith.

Cappy received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Merchant Marines. As a member of the Merchant Marines, Cappy served the United States proudly around the world. This included visits to the Rock of Gibraltar in the Mediterranean Sea, North Africa, Cuba, France (Marseille), England, Italy (Naples), Turkey, the Suez Canal and the Persian Gulf.

Cappy was employed and worked diligently with Roadway Trucking. His commitment to excellence was recognized as a Three Million Mile Driver without accident.

His hobbies included bass fishing, training hunting beagles, gardening and spending time with his family. In the spring, Cappy was an avid hunter of the Indiana morel mushroom. One could find him with a bread sack and walking stick as they were welcomed companions on many a spring day adventure. His memberships included Sterling Christian Church, American Legion Post 288, and the NRA.

Richard Dewayne Hancock represented the generation of Americans germane to whom we are today. He is one of many who worked hard every day, served their country in a world war and believed in God, family and community. As we say goodbye to his earthly body, his soul we celebrate going on to victory in Christ.

Graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, at Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 288. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Sterling Christian Church.

Arrangements entrusted to Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg.
