DANVILLE —
Robert Louis Burke, better known as PB by his friends, family and shooting buddies, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center.
Robert was born on Feb. 25, 1919, in Oakwood, to Minnie May Baker and Robert Burke.
PB was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Myrna (Nenna) Burke.
He is survived by his three daughters: Pamela (Keith) Baldwin, Penny Burke and Cindy (Don) Rokosch.
His grandchildren, Shaylan (Kerri) Baldwin, Emily Rokosch, Abby Rokosch and Susie Rokosch were the center of his life and focus of many jokes and stories after his retirement from flying. PB was also blessed to have two great-granddaughters, Lyla and Reese Baldwin.
PB was the son of a miner and farmer and helped his family with the farming operation until he joined the United States Army at the beginning of World War II. There he learned to fly and entered the Army Air Corps where he flew primarily twin-engine planes. He returned home in November 1945 and began his career as a commercial pilot for Howard Lauhoff at Lauhoff Grain Company. He retired from flying after 33 years and was then able to focus solely on enjoying life with his family and friends.
PB was an avid fisherman beginning in boyhood as a fishing guide at the Pollywogs in Oakwood. A great outdoorsmen and skeet shooter, he excelled in the sport which he began after retirement, winning numerous state skeet veteran shooting titles. He loved woodworking and blended this love with shooting, creating beautifully handcrafted ammunition boxes for all of his shooting buddies. Learning to play euchre at age 7 at the Pollywogs, PB’s prowess preceded him at every card table he graced. He was a huge part of his grandchildren’s lives and took every opportunity to attend their school and sporting events, birthday celebrations and special occasions. His cheeky wit, jokes and favorite sayings will be remembered and greatly missed by his many friends and family.
A celebration of his life and memories (visitation) will be held from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Pape Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a 6 p.m. funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, Nenna and PB preferred to have donations be sent to the Fair Hope Children’s Ministry, 908 May St., Danville, IL 61832. And to all of PB’s friends, he wants you to know that he was glad you got to know him.
