George L. Mahan

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — George L. Mahan, 79, of Chicago and Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of Danville, Ill., died peacefully at his Florida home on Oct. 23, 2012.

He was born March 2, 1933, to Clarence and Alma Mahan in Terre Haute, Ind. Though he lived many places, Terre Haute was always home.

He graduated from Garfield High School and Indiana State University and had a long career in information technology.

He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Danville. He was proud to have been a member of Red Mask Players and Danville Light Opera. In later years, he was happy to be a volunteer at the Vermilion County Museum, and he enjoyed studying his Mahan genealogy. He was a lifelong, devoted fan of Indiana University Basketball.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Lorelei Mercer Mahan, whom he met when they sang in the Peoples Gas Company choir in Chicago. He also is survived by their daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Mahan Isenhower (Michael) of Ottawa, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Jillian Stansell-Campo (Fernando), Nicholas Stansell and Haley Isenhower; a brother, William G. Mahan (Jane) of Franklin, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Nina Lorey of Terre Haute, Ind.; and a sister-in-law, Letitia Noel of Chicago, whom he and Lori raised as a daughter; a sister-in-law, Pamela Mercer of Bakersfield, Calif.; a wonderful family friend, Robert Buford of Chicago; and a dear friend, “our Florida daughter,” Mrs. Chris Bayles of Bradenton, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, Nov. 3, at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, 1203 Maple Ave., Terre Haute, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to your favorite charity engaged in the fight against cancer or the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation would be appreciated.
