CAYUGA, Ind. —
Leonard A. Dowers I, 82, of Cayuga, Ind., passed away at 12:27 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at Union Hospital Clinton in Clinton, Ind.
He was born June 26, 1928, in Cayuga, Ind., the son of the late Ernie and Vernie Nave Dowers.
He married Mary Bush on July 11, 1953, in Howard, Ind. She survives.
Other survivors include his children, Dennis (Linda) Dowers of Lewisburg, Tenn., Denise (Frank) Dixon of Georgetown, Ill., and Lenny (Missy) Dowers of Cayuga; seven grandchildren, Dwayne (Kasey) Dowers of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Alvin (Teri) Dowers of Columbia, Tenn., Matthew (Amber) Paige of Holden, Mass., Derek (Sadie Taylor) Paige of Cayuga, Manda (Terry) Paris of Catlin, Ill., Rylee and Teegan Dowers both of Cayuga; five great-grandchildren, Daelyne and Baylee Dowers both of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Mason and Cambrie Paige both of Holden, Mass., and Zyaan Taylor of Cayuga; and nephew, Darryl Copsy of Sacramento, Calif. He was a very special Grandpa to Skylar Dowers, and Kylee and Keri Heidbrider, all of Cayuga.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Leonard was a Korean War veteran, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was an auto mechanic formerly working at McMasters in Georgetown, Clark’s Chevrolet in Cayuga, Newport Army Plant in Newport, Ind., and the Cayuga Street Department.
Leonard was a lifetime member of the Cayuga American Legion Post 263 and a former member of the Pipefitters Local 157 in Terre Haute. Leonard enjoyed fishing, hunting, racing, camping and mowing.
Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren.
Funeral services: 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, Sept. 4, at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga. Officiating: Rev. Jack Holycross. Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Ind., with graveside military rites by the Cayuga American Legion Post 263; Visitation: 4-8 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 3, at the funeral home.
