Paul Erwin Kopp

DANVILLE — Paul Erwin Kopp, resident of Liberty Village, passed away at 12:32 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville.

He was born Jan. 10, 1923, to Henry and Hermine Kopp, of Malsch, Germany. Paul will be celebrating his 90th birthday in heaven!

Paul’s parents brought him and his sister to America in 1931 through Ellis Island, N.Y., where they were sponsored. They established their home in Milwaukee, Wis. There, Paul attended a school of trades for high school and later attended Stout University, Wis., where he acquired a degree in the study of the industrial arts.

Paul later joined the Army Air Corps (1943-1946). He was stationed and trained at Chanute Air Force Base as a radio operator. Paul served actively in World War II. He spent time in Europe, including service as a translator in Germany for post-surrender cleanup.

After the war, Paul took a position in Dayton, Ohio, with the Veterans Affairs hospital, where he served as an industrial arts instructor and occupational therapist. He met and married his first wife in Dayton and started a family. He later transferred with the VA to a position in Danville, where he settled to raise his family. After Margaret’s death, Paul later remarried his second wife, Mildred.

Paul had great love and passion for building with his hands, including six homes by himself and the occasional piece of furniture. He recycled and repurposed items with enthusiasm and creativity. He also enjoyed an adventuresome spirit for travel.

Family who have preceded Paul in death are his parents; his first wife of 32 years, Margaret Ann Clough Kopp of Darwin, married  1954-1986, parishioners of St. Patrick Church; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and stepdaughter, Joanne Faulkner (2009).

Survivors include Paul’s second wife, Mildred A. Hart Kopp of Rossville, married Dec. 12, 1987, parishioners of St. Paul Church; Clara Casey, Paul’s sister in Flushing, N.Y.; Paul’s children, Kevin (Kerry) of League City, Texas, Fred of Danville, Karl (Cathy) and sons, Matthew, Marcus of Redmond, Wash., Michael (Hey Eun) Katy of Texas, and MaryJo (Michael Moyer) of Indianapolis; stepchildren, Dianne (Jim) Edington, Steve Faulkner; five step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren.
