Ben Benting

COVINGTON, Ind. — Ben Benting, 91, of Covington, Ind., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at The Waters in Covington.

Ben was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Champaign County to John and Mary (Post) Benting.

He married Tena (Hayn) Benting on July 10, 1943, in Royal. She preceded him in death in 1998.

Ben and Tena farmed until retirement, first in Illinois until 1963 and then moving to Covington, Ind.

Ben was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Danville. He enjoyed spending time at Covington Friendship Circle and visiting with his neighbor and friend, Junior Shaw. He was a baseball fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved spending time with his family.

Ben is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Wayne) Bracken of Covington, Ind., and Bev Padgett of Danville; two sons, Mervin (Georgia) Benting of St. Joseph, and Roger Benting of Urbana; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Ernie (Frances) Benting of Danville; and a sister, Ann Freeman of St. Joseph.

Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Tena; one son, Ron; two brothers, Frank and Lorenz; one sister, Rosetta Hollenback; one son-in-law, Lonny Padgett; and two grandsons, Brian Benting and Ron Roberts.

A celebration of Ben’s life will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Danville, with Pastor Ed Stone officiating. A visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Memorials can be made in Ben’s name to Bethel Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice.
