DANVILLE —
Herbert H. Harper, a Danville native and husband of Betty Harper, passed away Jan. 10, 2013, at age 92.
Herb, son of Raymond and Nelle Wurtsbaugh Harper, was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Danville.
He married Juanita (Betty) True on May 30, 1941, and they celebrated their 71st anniversary in May 2012. Betty passed away June 29, 2012.
Survivors include a sister, Katie Balsley of Danville; two sons, Doug (Cheri) Harper of Greer, S.C., and Mark (Beckie) Harper of Danville; three grandchildren, Adam Harper of Urbana, Hilary (Chris) Rikard of Greer, and Ben (Miranda) Harper of Greenville, S.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Herb was predeceased by a brother, Doug Harper; a sister, Helen (Harper) Klayer; a granddaughter, Kristi (Harper) Kempf; and just recently, a brother-in-law, Ron Balsley.
A graduate of Danville High School, Herb was a World War II veteran attached to General Patton’s Third Army in Europe. He continued over the years to stay in touch with his “Army buddies” and shed tears too often recently over the losses of many. He was one of the “Greatest Generation” and was quietly proud of having served his country during wartime.
Herb was a member of Central Christian Church, American Legion Post 210, United Commercial Travelers 272, and Teamsters Local 26. He retired as credit manager from Rhodes-Buford Furniture Store in 1992 after 30 years of employment.
Among Herb’s hobbies were reading of all kinds and Internet surfing. He was always there to support his family in their various needs and endeavors with a smile on his face. He was often behind the scenes in serving various organizations. He accompanied his sons on Boy Scout hikes and coached their Little League baseball teams. Most important, Herb unfailingly displayed his love for his wife Betty in her years of suffering with Alzheimer’s.
The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Pastor Hank Anderson of Central Christian Church will preside. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1 p.m. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to Central Christian Church or the Danville District 118 Community Foundation.
Please join Herb’s family in sharing memories, photos and video of his life through his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
