COVINGTON, Ind. —
Merle Chester Suiters, 89, died at 8:25 a.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis.
He was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Wabash Township, the son of the late Purlie Chester and Edith Lucille Brewer Suiters.
He graduated from Perrysville High School in 1939 and attended Indiana Normal College. Merle served in the Navy in World War II. He was a life resident of Covington until moving to Indianapolis in 2003. He was a member and elder emeritus of Covington First Church of Christ and attended Traders Point Christian Church at Whitestown.
He served over 20 years on the Covington Community School Board, later was a member of the Covington School Holding Corp., a director of West Central Evangelistic Association (Hanging Rock), on the advisory committee of Fountain Trust Co. He received an art award from the d’Arlier Cultural Center for his designs for the Veedersburg Library.
Merle married Elizabeth Hunt on Oct. 18, 1941, at Veedersburg, Ind., and she survives. Also surviving are three children, Michael (Loretta) Suiters of Covington, Carol (Stephen) Tipton and Nancy Suiters, both of Indianapolis; a brother, Gordon Suiters of Covington; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. EDT Sunday at First Church of Christ with Randy Walters officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery with military honors by the VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. EDT Saturday at Shelby Funeral Home. Memorials suggested to St. Vincent Hospice with envelopes available at the funeral home.
