How to place an obituary

Please note: any individual submitting an obituary is required to provide the name and phone number of the coroner, funeral home or cremation service that handled the arrangements. All deaths must be verified.

Free obituaries

In a free obituary, we include: the person’s name, age, city and state, time, date and place of death, one statement of fact and times/dates of services. We do not include any survivors in free obituaries.

Free obituaries only run once in print. Then we will run the services in a different section until the services pass.

*We can, however, run the free obituary once if services are pending and again when services have been confirmed.

Paid death notices

In a full, paid obituary, we include anything you want, including a photo. We charge by word count. The charge for a second photo is $14.

All standard paid death notices run for two days. You also have the option to run them for three days at a discounted rate. Paid death notices are also posted on our website.

*A short, free obituary is automatically included with a paid death notice.

Deadline:

You must have any obituary or death notice in and paid for by 5 p.m. the day before you want it to run. If you are out of town, you will have to call in with a credit card.

*If you are a funeral home representative, you have until 8 p.m. to submit an obituary.

How to submit a free obituary or paid death notice:

You can e-mail the obit to newsroom@dancomnews.com, or fax it to (217) 446-6648. You can also bring in the obituary to the Commercial-News at 17 W. North St. *If you decide to e-mail or fax an obituary, it is your responsibility to call and confirm that we have received it. Also, before submitting an obituary via e-mail or fax, we suggest you save a copy elsewhere for your records.

For rates and more information, e-mail us, or call Brittney Henton, newsroom clerk, at (217) 477-5181. You can also call (217) 477-5182.
