PEORIA — Danville center Rod Guthrie knows he is getting one last chance to represent the Viking football program.
Guthrie will take the field tonight in Peoria for the East squad in the Illinois Coaches Association Shrine All-Star Football game.
“I really thought that my last game for Danville was back in November,’’ he said. “But, this is my last chance to represent Danville High. Actually, it’s a chance to represent the whole community.’’
Guthrie is the only player from Vermilion County selected for the game.
He admits that there is a huge difference in the talent level during this week’s practices.
“There are a bunch of us from the Big 12 Conference in this game,’’ said Guthrie, as the East squad had six players from the league, including running backs Darrelyn Dunn of Bloomington and Darius Bell of Normal West. “I was just talking with (Marcus Johnson) of Bloomington and we couldn’t believe how talented the players are in our conference.’’
Not only are the practices filled with talent but Guthrie is really looking forward to tonight’s game.
“We want to represent ourselves well and this will be a good experience heading into college football in a month or so,’’ said Guthrie, who leaves for McKendree College on Aug. 15.
In addition to football, Guthrie has gotten the opportunity to visit sick children at the Shriner’s hospital in Peoria.
“It was kind of neat to be able to meet those guys,’’ he said. “It makes you feel fortunate.’’
Tonight’s game at Peoria Stadium will kick off at 6:30 p.m.
