Storm fights back in fourth, but lose to Carrollton

CARROLLTON — The Salt Fork football team were down 20-0 going into the fourth quarter of their Class 1A second round game against Carrollton, but the fight was far from over for the Storm.

Salt Fork scored three touchdowns in the fourth to put a scare into the Hawks, but a turnover late ended the Storm’s rise and the season with a 26-20 defeat.

“The kids played tough until the end and that is something we have been doing all year,” Salt Fork coach Brian Plotner said. “It is a testament for them that they were able to come back from being down.”

The Hawks built the big lead in the second quarter with three touchdowns over the slow-starting Storm.

“It was a tale of two halves,” Salt Fork coach Brian Plotner said. “We made some turnovers and gave them some short fields. But we fought back and we were able to get the ball with 1:15 left, but we turned the ball over.”

Salt Fork started the fourth with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Hughes to Luke Maddox, and then Clayton Fauver took over as he scored two five-yard scoring runs.

Fauver would end up with 34 yards rushing while Colton Fauver had 33 and Hughes had 14. Hughes was also 14-of-40 for 157 yards and an interception with Maddox catching five passes for 67 yards and Nick Hedges catching four for 47.

The Storm end the season at 9-2, but it did include a first-round playoff win and something for Plotner to build on for next season.

“We lost eight seniors and while the ending was not what we wanted for them, I am proud of what they have done here,” Plotner said. “For the younger players, they got a chance to go to the second round and travel three hours for a game and it was a great experience for them.”
