Still plenty of time to get some hunting in

DANVILLE — With 2013 rolling in with a bunch of cold weather, outdoors enthusiasts need to stop and take a look at what seasons are left for the remainder of this year’s hunting.

The archery deer season as well as the last segment of the Late Winter Anterless Only season give deer hunters a last chance to bag a deer. The archery season ends Jan. 20 while the Late Winter season runs Jan. 18-20. The fall archery wild turkey season ends on Jan. 20 as well.

Those hunters wanting to hunt Upland Game (rabbit, pheasant and quail, and partridge) will end in our zone on Jan. 8 and ends in the southern zone on Jan. 22nd.

The state’s groundhog season ends March 31 and crow season runs through Feb. 28th. The hunting seasons for raccoon and opossum end on Feb. 10th in the north zone while the hunting season for red and gray fox ends Jan. 31st statewide. The hunting seasons for coyotes and striped skunk is year round statewide now that the main firearm deer seasons are over.

The trapping season runs through Jan. 20th in our zone for raccoon, opossum, skunk, weasel, mink, muskrat, fox (both red and gray), coyotes and badger.

There is still some of the waterfowl season left for those wanting to hunt ducks and geese.

The duck season is over in our zone as well as the north zone. Ducks hunters will need to travel as the south central zone closes Jan. 8th and the south zone closes Jan. 20th.

All four zones are still open for Canada geese. The north zone closes Jan. 17th, the central zone (our zone) as well as the south central and the south zone all close Jan. 31st for Canada geese.

Snow geese as well and blue, Ross and Brant geese along with white-fronted geese are in season through Jan. 31st in the central, south central and south zones but closes Jan. 17th in the north zone.

There is a Conservation Order Light Goose Season which allows hunters to hunt snow/blue and Ross’ geese from Feb. 1 – March 31 in the central, south central and south zones; Jan. 18 – March 31 in the north zone.

There is still time to get out and enjoy some hunting yet this season and the ice is beginning to tighten up on area lakes and ponds. Just be sure to keep yourself warm and safe as this is not a time for someone unprepared to brave the elements.
