Ingram ruled ineligible for season

CHICAGO — Former Danville High School and current Chicago Simeon guard Donte Ingram was ruled ineligible by the IHSA for the rest of the season on Tuesday because of residence issues.

Ingram was ineligible because he was residing with someone who has not established legal guardianship, according to a Chicago Tribune story.

Ingram’s father, Donald Ingram, told the Tribune on Sunday that Ingram was temporarily residing with a guardian while he prepares to move the rest of his family to Chicago from Danville.

According to IHSA rules, a transfer student’s move from one public school district to another must coincide with a family’s relocation or change in guardianship for participation in athletics.

Danville refused to concur with the transfer in writing, which triggered a Chicago Public Schools investigation. CPS cleared Ingram for participation prior to the season, but the IHSA decided to review Ingram’s case after receiving an official inquiry from Danville.

“We don’t feel good about this result — a kid not being able to play,” said Danville athletics director B.J. Luke after Tuesday’s basketball game against Champaign Central. “But, this was beyond our control. Our main focus is protecting our school and protecting our ability to play on a level field. We believe that everybody abides by the same rules as everybody else.”

Simeon, the three-time defending Class 4A champion, also had two other players declared ineligible on Tuesday, including former Champaign St. Thomas More player Jaycee Hillsman, but neither the Wolverines nor coach Bob Smith were found not guilty of recruiting the players and will not have to forfeit any of its 12 victories as a result of the rulings.
