Weather is boosting big hunting season

DANVILLE — This is the second day of the four-day second firearm deer season in Illinois and hunters are having some of the best deer hunting weather most can remember in recent years.

Illinois deer hunters harvested more than 5,000 more deer during the first segment of the hunt and, with the great weather during the second season they should have great harvest results for the overall seven-day season.

Deer hunters need to be aware of the warm temperatures not too common for this time of the year.

Don’t hang your deer too long in these temperatures and don’t put your deer on a hot truck bed because the heat will radiate right into the meat. Use common sense when handling your deer, especially if you plan to mount the head or tan the skin.

Good luck and have a safe firearm hunt.

New bill to help IDNR

Senate Bill 1566, a crucial funding bill for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, passed Wednesday by a 39-11 vote and is going to Governor Patrick Quinn for signing. This bill will help fund the IDNR, which has been hard hit by budget cuts over the past few years.

“This vote is a victory for conservation and the environment in Illinois; it is also a victory for the economy and communities across the state that use and rely on the services the IDNR provides on a daily basis. I commend State Representative Frank Mautino and State Senator Toi Hutchinson for their leadership and hard work leading up to today’s action. I also want to thank the members of Illinois’ General Assembly who supported this bill, which will allow us to meet the needs of constituents, including those who use our state parks in the years to come,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller.

“While it’s important to remember that capturing these new funds will take time, we will work as quickly as we can to put the new revenues toward their intended purpose. Passage of this bill will help us hire critical staff to maintain state parks, fix aging infrastructure, speed up regulatory functions and make a bigger difference in the lives of everyone we serve,” added Miller.
