Coming off a successful start at the Topper Classic, the Schlarman boys basketball team started Vermilion Valley Conference play on Friday and it was also a success with a 54-40 win over Hoopeston Area.
Andrew Kelley led the Hilltoppers with 20 points, while Chris Kuchefski had 16 and Austin Calhoun had 14.
“We played very well and our frontcourt stepped up for us,” Schlarman coach Gary Tidwell said. “Michael Simmons (four points) also played well as our point guard and was key for our offense.”
Mason Layden led the Cornjerkers with 17 points, while Daniel Lawson had 12 and Brennan Crose added seven.
The Hilltoppers are 3-1 and will take on Bismarck-Henning on Dec. 8 while the Cornjerkers drop to 1-6 and will play Westville on Dec. 8.

MONTICELLO — The Blue Devils took an early 8-6 lead after the first quarter, but could not hold back the Sages in the final three quarters.
Austin Toler had 15 points for Bismarck-Henning while Chase Connelly had eight and Andy Bott added seven points. Austin Reinken had seven rebounds while Connelly had three steals.
The Blue Devils are 5-2.

Deland-Weldon 32
WELDON — Jonathan Garver had 20 points as the Knights defeated Deland-Weldon.
Zane Bumpus had 11 points for First Baptist, battled back from an early 8-2 deficit, while John Martin added three.
The Knights are 2-1 and will host Illinois Central on Tuesday.

South Newton 25
WILLIAMSPORT, Ind. — Jordan Stover had 17 points as the Patriots more than doubled up South Newton in non-conference play.
Zach Stitt had 12 points for Seeger while Borden Kennedy added nine points.

Woodard named All-State
North Vermillion’s Brayden Woodard was a standout for the Falcons on offense as a quarterback and on defense as a defensive back.
The junior was named to the Class 1A All-State team as a defensive back and he was not the only Falcon to get honors.
Running back Kody Zumwalt, offensive linemen Robbie Davis and Dakota Uplinger and linebacker Ethan Kunkle was each named honorable mention.
Also, Fountain Central quarterback Michael Duane was named honorable mention in the Class 2A All-State Team.

DANVILLE — The Dashers was tied 3-3 with the Outlaws after the first period, but did not have enough firepower to get the win.
Darick Ste. Marie had a hat trick with two assists for Danville while David Lun, Ryan Stern and Jonathan Juliano each had goals.
Stern and Dustin Skinner each had three assists while Lee McClure, Justin Levac and Shawn McNulty each had one assist.
The Dashers will host the Outlaws again today at 7:05 p.m. at the David S. Palmer Arena.
