Seeger sweeps up team titles at WRC meet

COVINGTON, Ind. — Seeger took four of the girls’ top-10 finishes and three of the boys’ top-10 finishes in a sweep of both the girls and boys Wabash River Conference cross country titles.

The Patriots, running on the neutral Rivercrest Golf Course, took the girls’ title first with 31 points, defeating Fountain Central (51), Covington (78), Attica (84) and Riverton Parke (113). North Vermillion and Rockville did not have enough runners to field a team.

Seeger’s boys won in a closer contest with 47 points, better than Riverton Parke (53), North Vermillion (74), Fountain Central (75) and Attica (81). Rockville did not field a complete boys team.

Fountain Central freshman Morgan Grubb won the girls’ race, completing five kilometers in 21 minutes, 48 seconds. Grubb said butterflies in her stomach made her first of three miles faster than she hoped for, but she had enough to finish. This is Grubb’s first season running competitively. She started her running career last spring in junior high track.

North Vermillion’s Taylor Turchi placed second in 22:20. Turchi said she hoped to keep Grubb in sight during the race and improve from last year’s third-place WRC finish.

Fountain Central’s Carolyn Trueblood finished third in 22:34 after dropping to 16th place early in the race. She made her goal of finishing in the top three and survived the race with temperatures in the 80’s.

“Temperature always plays a part, but I’m used to running in this,” she said.

Seeger’s Levi Talbert placed second in the boys meet (18:23), behind first-place finisher Riley Stohler of Riverton Parke. Talbert wasn’t thrilled with his time, but considered it acceptable on a slower course.

“I tried to work toward Riley, but he had too much distance on me,” he said.

North Vermillion’s Taylor Kilgore finished third (18:42), despite struggling with some dehydration and tight muscles. He started the race with his fastest first mile of the season.

Seeger coach Miles Stucky’s girls squad has struggled with illness. Although he was happy with the victory, he had hoped for more.

The boys squad’s performance was more of what he hoped for. Jacob Warrick, the Patriots’ fifth runner, dropped two minutes off his best time to be the turning point in the victory, Stucky said.

Fountain Central coach Corey Smaltz was happy for his first-place and third-place finishes on the girls side but saw other positives. Rachel Johnson finished eight place for her first all-conference performance, and his team was able to spread five runners from first to last place and still finished in second place.

The boys, however, “got beat tonight,” Smaltz said, and lost to Riverton Parke, North Vermillion and Seeger, all teams the Mustangs have defeated.

North Vermillion’s highlights included Jonathan Flanary’s fifth-place finish, where his best time seeded him 11th, coach Lorie Turchi said. After psyching himself out about the big race, he was able to calm down and perform, she said.

Attica coach Sarah Mattern saw several bright spots in her team’s performances. Kara Harmeson, whose times didn’t place in the WRC top 10, finished seventh, and freshman Kenny Little finished ninth — making the all-conference team.

Covington earned one all-conference spot with Kelsey Kellams’s ninth-place finish. The Trojans put together finishes of 16th (Miranda Tuggle), 20th (Brittany Fletcher), 23rd (Daisy Crawford) and 30th (Morgan Millikan) to finish third.

Teams will prepare for sectional competition on Tuesday. Among the teams’ goals, according to their coaches:

Seeger: top five finish for boys and second-place finish for girls.

Fountain Central: top five team finishes for boys and girls.

North Vermillion: regional qualifying performances for three boys and Turchi.

Attica: improving goal times with individual regional berths.
