Comets keep on winning trend

BISMARCK — Every team wants to playing its best basketball heading into the postseason and according to coach Rick Bough, the Oakwood Comets have achieved that goal over the last two weeks by playing some of their best games of the season.

That trend continued Monday as the Comets took on the Georgetown-Ridge Farm Buffaloes in Class 2A regional action at Bismarck-Henning.

Led by a game-high 33 points from Amy Martin and a stingy defense that allowed four points in the second half, the Comets got out to a early lead and never looked back for a 57-18 victory.

The win gave the Comets 20 wins (20-10) for the fourth consecutive season.

“Twenty wins has been a goal for the team since the season started and was another step for us,” said Bough. “To win 20 four straight years is a testament to the players who have come through this program.

“We have had some explosive scorers like Amy, but nothing would have been possible without everyone playing their role and contributing to the team.

“Kassandra Ashikyan for example, plays the bottom position in our 1-3-1 zone and without her play there we couldn’t do what we do at the top. We reached a goal, but it was most important for us to get a win on this floor which helps us get ready for Bismarck-Henning on Wednesday.”

Martin left the game with two minutes to go in the third quarter. She scored in double figures in each quarter and also added eight rebounds.

“Amy is a great player and gets what she gets on the floor from a lot of hard work,” Bough said. “I really thought Georgetown did a pretty good job on her, but she was able to use her speed and agility to get some steals and some points.

“She also has really good hands and we did a nice job of finding her and getting her the ball.”

Defensively the Comets held the Buffaloes scoreless in the third quarter and only allowed one field goal in the second half.

“I really think we are a better defensive team than we are given credit for,” Bough said. “We have a lot of length and our pressure forces other teams to shoot the ball before they want to.

“We dropped back into a 2-3 zone in the second half but we remained active in it and I think four points is the fewest points we have allowed in a half this season. “

The Buffaloes took an early 4-2 lead before the Comets went on a 21-4 run to end the first quarter up 23-8.

The Buffaloes’ Logan Beckley would end the first half scoring with a late basket but the Comets still went to halftime up 39-14.

Martin would score the first 10 points of the second half before leaving the game with the Comets ending the third period up 51-14. Their lead would reach a high of 42 points early in the fourth quarter.

The Comets also got 15 combined points from their sophomore duo of Angela Elliot and Makenzie Baker.

“When we started the season we weren’t sure how much they could contribute this year but both players have exceeded expectations,” Bough said. “Makenzie plays with a lot of energy and can really cause some havoc on the floor. Angela has done a great job at the point.

“She will really be tested Wednesday but she seems to have her best games against the best competition and Bismarck-Henning is certainly undefeated this season for a reason.”

The Comets return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday to take on the top-seeded Blue Devils.

“We struggled with our free throws tonight but that has been hit or miss all season and hopefully it doesn’t bite us against Bismarck,” Bough said. “The key will be handling their pressure and applying some of our own. They are the best team we have faced and we know it will be an upset if we win but we will do everything in our power to make that happen.”

The loss ends the season for the Buffaloes who say goodbye to seniors Tayler Beckley, Lakyn Foehrer, Kaylee Nesbitt, Sawyer Winland, and Annah Dallenberg.

“The game and the season didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to,” said Buffaloes coach Don Hackler. “We just need to put in the effort and get better next year.”
