LOCAL ROUNDUP: Schlarman rallies to beat Salt Fork

SIDELL — Freshman Sierra Bell scored a game-high 27 points as the Schlarman Academy Hilltoppers rallied to beat the Salt Fork Storm 58-45 on Monday night in a Vermilion Valley Conference girls basketball contest.

Schlarman, which improved to 11-9 overall and 6-2 in the Vermilion Valley Conference, scored 22 fourth-quarter points to overcome a five-point deficit (41-36) starting the final quarter.

Salt Fork was held to just four points in the final eight minutes.

Joining Bell in double figures for the Hilltoppers was Janelle Marion with 14.

Leading the Storm in scoring was Emilie McFadden with 14, while Heather Ellis had 12.

GEORGETOWN — The Lady Buffaloes extended their home-court win streak with a five-point victory over the Blue Devils.

Maya Green had a game-high 14 points for Georgetown-Ridge Farm, which hasn’t lost a game at home in two years, while Brittany Hay chipped in with 10.

Jessica Hall was the leading scorer for Bismarck-Henning with 11 points, while Brooke Walsh finished with 10.

FITHIAN — The Comets scored the game’s first 11 points, but it was the Cornjerkers rallying to get the Vermilion Valley Conference victory.

Senior Olivia Smith scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter as Hoopeston Area outscored Oakwood 25-9.

The Cornjerkers did most of their damage at the free-throw line as they were 13-of-16 at the charity stripe in the final eight minutes.

Cayla Davis had a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points for Hoopeston Area.

Oakwood had two players in double figures with Harlena Hardin scoring a game-high 18 and Lexy Terry chipped in with 10.

MILFORD — The Raiders had three players in double figures to beat the Bearcats.

Morgan Small led Iroquois West with 11 points, while Elena Sanchez and Desiree Medina each chipped in with 10.

Cornisha Allen had a game-high 14 points for Milford, while Alissa Totheroh and Erin McNally were next with seven and six points respectively.

DANVILLE — The Knights were held scoreless in the first and third quarters of their loss.

Hannah Wells scored a team-high 12 points with four baskets in the second quarter and two more in the fourth.

ROCK ISLAND — The Lady Jaguars got the 2013 portion of their season off on the right foot with a victory over the Vikings.

Stephanie Lord had a team-high 18 points to lead Danville Area Community College, while Emily Montgomery had 15 and Hillary Lively chipped in with 13.

The Lady Jaguars, who improve to 12-5, are back in action on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. contest at Lindenwood-Belleville.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Karisma Penn continued her torrid play for the Illini with 34 points and 12 rebounds in a win over the Buckeyes.

Penn, who was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second week in a row, was an amazing 16-of-17 at the free-throw line for Illinois, which improved to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten Conference.

Adriene GodBold added 14, while Amber Moore had 10 for the Fighting Illini.

DANVILLE — A balanced attack by the Cyclones was too much for the Knights.

Bloomington Cornerstone Academy had 11 different players score, including three in double figures to beat First Baptist.

Jonathan Garver was the only Knight in double figures as he scored a game-high 23 points.
