LOCAL ROUNDUP: Danville gets two regional champions

MAHOMET —  While the Danville and Westville wrestling teams took sixth and seventh, respectively at a IHSA Class 2A regional on Saturday, both teams were able to send representatives to next week’s sectional at Mattoon.

For the Vikings, two members got in the best way possible by winning regional titles. Javeonte Crider won the 113 pound title with a 9-7 win over Mahomet-Seymour’s Kolton Taylor while Trae Wilson was tops at 145 with a 4-3 win over Mahomet-Seymour’s Kyle Heller.

The Tigers did not have any class winners but had three wrestlers advance as Jeremy Rivers was second at 182, Jessie Munoz was second at 220 and Tyler Dicken was third at 195.

Covington wrestlers make semi-states

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Covington’s Dalton Hardy and Karson Allen continued their stellar seasons by advancing to next week’s New Castle semi-state meet.

Hardy was second at 220 pounds, losing his first match of the season in the final against Zionsville’s Jacob Aven 5-4 to drop to 30-1.

Allen is 25-4 after making the consolation final but losing to Hamilton Southeastern’s Jeff Dixon 11-6 to take fourth at 195.

Joining the duo from Covington is Seeger’s Jordan Horath, who took fourth at 152 and will go into next week’s action at 30-9.

Knights tops at tourney


ALTON — First Baptist won four out of five games, including the title game 49-45, to win the Mississippi Valley basketball tournament.

Jonathan Garver was named the MVP for the tournament while John Martin was named to the All-Tournament team.

DANVILLE — Lynette Buggs had 11 points and six rebounds as the Lady Vikings held on to defeat Bloomington in Big 12 Conference action.

Alexis Jimson-Miller had 10 points with five rebounds, six steals and two assists for Danville while Alexis Hoskins added four points and Michela Jones had five steals and four assists.

The Lady Vikings will next play Thursday against Champaign Central.

Delzell wins event as Danville takes fifth


NORMAL — Jon Delzell won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.61 seconds as the Vikings took fifth at the Big 12 Championships.

Delzell was also fourth in the 100 freestyle (50.07) for Danville, who was missing senior Max Shannon.

“(Shannon) had a pec injury and he could not swim, so we were pleased to get fifth,” Danville coach Carl Long said. “We had some guys step up for us and we had about 14 or 15 personal bests.”

Parker Arnholt was 8th in the 200 (2:03.24) and 500 (5:39) freestyles while Lucas Miller was seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:02.51) and fifth in the breaststroke (1:09.92).

The 200 medley relay of Tristan Wolfe, Logan McBee, Miller and Delzell was fourth (1:50.53) while the 400 freestyle relay of Jordan Ledezma, Delzell, Arnholt and Wolfe was also fourth (3:40.19).

The Vikings will take a week off before going to sectional action in Champaign.

DANVILLE — The Jaguars won their ninth game in a row and reached the 20-win mark by defeating the Lynx.

DACC started off slow but heated up late to take a 33-20 halftime lead. The hot shooting continued to start the second half as the Jaguars upped the lead to 18, but Lincoln would tie things up at 58-58 with 6 minutes, 8 seconds remaining.

The Jaguars would rally with a 22-15 run to end the game.

Kody Tucker came off the bench to lead DACC with 19 points while Evan Blackmon had 13 points; Chris Whitehead added 11 and Mike Ryce had 10.

The Jaguars are 20-3 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-West Athletic Conference and will play Rend Lake College on Wednesday.

DANVILLE — Megan Hiner hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to give the Lady Jaguars a thrilling win over the Lynx.

Tierra Golightly had 14 points for DACC, who also had 18 steals and 29 turnovers, while Hiner had 13 and Kamaren Cole and Samantha Siddens each had nine.

The Lady Jaguars had a 10 point lead in the second half, but lost it as Lincoln went on a 13-0 run. The game was tied at 61 before Hiner’s heroics.

The Lady Jaguars are 17-7 and 4-1 in the Mid-West Athletic Conference and will play the MacMurray College Junior Varsity on Wednesday.

DANVILLE — The Dashers tried to come back but could not overcome an early flurry by the Demonz.

Ryan Huggett, Ryan Stern, Jonathan Juliano and Kevin McCready each had goals for Danville while Stern had two assists, while Juliano, Huggett, Joe Pace, Dustin Skinner, Billy Hunt and Michael Jordan each had one assist.

Justin Sand had 36 saves in goal for the Dashers, who will face Dayton again on Tuesday.

Scottland 1-1 in Elite Eight


ST. JOSEPH — Chrisman Scottland defeated Virginia 38-30 but lost in the Class 7A state semifinal against Dieterich 52-35.

Chrisman Scottland is 21-5 and will face Mulberry Grove on Thursday for third place.
