DANVILLE —
Records are made to be broken, but few people had any idea the Danville Post 210 Speakers’ single-season home run mark could be set so early, and seemingly with such ease.
Dabo Worthington, who recently finished his baseball career at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., surpassed Geoff Desmond’s mark in 2007 with 13 homers.
And on the first pitch of his seventh-inning at bat against Champaign Post 24 on Monday, Bismarck-Henning product Tyler McKenzie hit his 14th homer of the summer, adding his name to the impressive list of Speakers sluggers.
“It’s impressive,” Danville coach Adam Decker said. “This is game No. 27 and he’s hit 14, so one every two games is the pace he is on. That’s impressive at any level.
“I thought today he seemed a little more relaxed than maybe the last four or five games. It’s just a weird feeling when he goes up. You’re seeing the velocity of the pitcher thinking, ‘He’s going to leave the yard on this guy.’ It doesn’t matter which pitcher they bring in, I think that every time. That’s just outstanding. And we have 13 regular season games left. But now he just gets to relax and have some fun.”
There was no doubt McKenzie’s walk-off, three-run blast — which gave Post 210 a 12-1 win — would clear Danville Stadium’s left field wall, and little question he would eventually set the mark after hitting four home runs in a June 20 doubleheader against Toledo to tie Worthington’s record.
But even though he had been hitting homers at such a rapid pace, McKenzie admitted the idea of breaking the record was lingering in the back of his mind.
“It made me press a little bit, but I just had to keep working at it and try not to,” McKenzie said. “After this wood bat tournament (over the weekend in Champaign), I just said let’s go for doubles. Just try to get base hits and help the team.”
McKenzie was hit by a pitch in his first at bat, and later scored as the Speakers (21-6) put three runs on the board in the first inning. The second time he stepped to the plate, he sent Champaign pitcher Tyler Tester’s offering off the left field wall for a double. McKenzie then went to the opposite field for a triple in the sixth before hitting the record-setting bomb in walk-off fashion, leaving him a single away from the cycle in a game originally scheduled for nine innings.
McKenzie’s three-hit, five-RBI performance overshadowed an otherwise solid outing by Post 210 pitcher Zane Dillon (3-0) who went six innings, striking out six and allowing one unearned run before being relieved by McKenzie.
After allowing two hits and walking one in the first inning, Dillon retired 11 batters in order, and 15 of the final 16 he faced.
“Zane did a real nice job,” Decker said. “He kind of struggled getting the offspeed stuff over early. Then about inning three, he just started pumping it up there. He dug down a little bit, and I’m like, ‘We’re just going to stick with the fastball here,’ and that’s what he did. He had that three-pitch inning (in the third). I think he was just putting the fastball by them there for a few innings.”
Dillon, Cody Burton and Aaron Lewellyn each had two hits for the Speakers, while Chuckie Robinson, had three RBIs, and Burton and Lewellyn each drove in two runs.
Danville is scheduled to host Pekin on Wednesday at Garfield Park before traveling to Cincinnati on Thursday for a weekend tournament.
