LOCAL ROUNDUP: Michael Davan clinches crown

WHEATON — Former Bismarck-Henning and IUPUI golfer Michael Davan won the 93rd CDGA Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf Course with a 4 &3 win over Moline’s David Lawrence.

Davan found himself leading 1-up over Lawrence on the 12th hole before the match was delayed for 2 hours and 40 minutes because of rain. Following the delay, Davan won three consecutive holes to open a 4-up lead which he would not relinquish en route to victory.

“I had a different situation yesterday with a delay,” Davan said. “Today, we were able to hit balls prior to heading out, so that helped.”

After winning the 12th hole, Davan knocked his tee shot on 13 to within 6 feet, carding a birdie to go 3-up. Another birdie at the 14th put Davan 4 up, and from there, the lead grew to as many as 6 through 19 holes, but never closer than 3.

The match started with each player carding a par on the first seven holes, with Davan finally breaking suit with a birdie on the 8th hole to take the lead. Lawrence would square the match with a par on the 10th hole of the match, but when he ended up in the fescue on 11, Davan capitalized, winning the hole with a par. From that point, he never relinquished the lead.

“Last year the CDGA Amateur was my first experience in match play and I lost in the first round,” Davan added. “After that, I had a plan and stuck to the process, stayed within myself, never got away from the plan and gave myself chances.”

The win was Davan’s first in an amateur event, following victories in junior and collegiate events during his career at IUPUI.
