LOCAL ROUNDUP: Historic night in Chrisman

CHRISMAN —

A legend in Illinois high school boys basketball was honored on Monday night.

In a ceremony before Chrisman’s game against Tri-County, the court at Chrisman High School was renamed after long-time coach Roger Beals.

Before this season, Beals ranked 27th in all-time wins (638) in IHSA history. During his 23 seasons with the Cardinals, Chrisman finished second in the IHSA Class A state tournament in 1985 and they were third in the 1987 tourney.

Chrisman teams had 20 or more victories in all but two seasons during his tenure and they captured 14 regional titles and four sectional titles to go along with the two trips to state.

In 1985, Beals was inducted in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, now located at the David S. Palmer Arena. He is also in the Wabash Valley Hall of Fame and the Eastern Illinois University Hall of Fame.

Beals also coached cross country at Chrisman with both his boys and girls teams in 1988 claiming a a state title.

And the Chrisman Cardinals honored the legendary coach in style on Monday night with a 51-43 victory over Tri-County.
