DANVILLE —
While his first season as a starting quarterback wasn’t quite as good as he wanted, Danville’s Trent Sherfield caught the eye of college scouts.
Sherfield, a junior, rushed for 1,029 yards and passed for another 1,598 as the Vikings were 4-5 this past year.
On Saturday, Sherfield attended junior day at the University of Illinois and today, he is at the University of Indiana, those trips come on the heels of a trip with coach B.J. Luke last Sunday to Iowa.
“It’s really overwhelming,’’ Sherfield said. “I’m making a lot of trips. It’s all a great life experience for me and I’m going to enjoy it as much as I can.’’
In between his visits to Big Ten schools, Sherfield got his first official scholarship offer his past week from Illinois State University.
“That felt really good and I was kind of surprised by it,’’ Sherfield said. “The Illinois State coach came to talk with coach (Luke) and when he left, he said they offered me a full ride.’’
The Redbirds, who went 9-4 this past season and advanced to the second round of the FCS playoffs, are coached by Brock Spack and they want Sherfield to play quarterback.
Sherfield said he’s been contacted by a lot of schools including BSC schools Cincinnati, Michigan State and Oregon along with Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
“I’m being looked at as a quarterback,’’ said Sherfield, who has started at safety for the past two years and at quarterback this past year. “Obviously, I’m a football player, first and foremost, and I will play where the coaches want me to play.
“But, I consider myself to be a quarterback.’’
