CHAMPAIGN —
Sometimes one simply cannot explain what goes through the mind of a high school athlete.
Take the case of Bismarck-Henning’s Morgan Supergan, who was trying to win the school’s first state wrestling title since Eric Johnson accomplished the feat back in 1992.
Supergan, who entered Friday’s semifinal action at 33-2, lost in an unfortunate turn of events as he sustained a cut to his forehead — and after the blood time — ended up going down in defeat to Gus Eisele of Poplar Bluff (North Boone) by a 4-3 decision.
That dropped Supergan to the semifinal wrestle backs on Saturday afternoon, where he faced Justin Alonzo from Chicago Gordon Tech with a chance to get back and at least compete for third place. The match began with Supergan gaining the early advantage, and holding that through the end of the first period. But, evidently, the cut that temporarily stopped the match on Friday night reopened, and the match was halted not once, but twice.
Alonzo gained the advantage in the third period when Supergan was called for the first of two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for stepping off the mat to spit without asking permission to do so.
Supergan received the second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for jumping the whistle with just three seconds left in the match, and what later was ruled as an ejection from the competition.
Supergan and head coach Andy Head were unavailable for comment after the match, but assistant coach Henry Patton simply said that “he lost his composure, and it was a tragic end to what could have been.”
As a result, Supergan’s final match, for fifth place, resulted in a forfeit to Sherrard’s Ben Corlett.
