Comets eliminate Buffaloes

HOOPESTON — The lead was a slippery thing to try to keep when Oakwood and Georgetown-Ridge Farm faced each other in boys’ basketball regional action.

Both teams grabbed the lead only to see it escape their grasp and go over to their opponent.

Georgetown-Ridge Farm took an early 6-0 lead but Parker Lee and Kyle Elliot brought the Comets right back only to see the Buffs push ahead 11-6 after one quarter.

Oakwood scored the first basket of the second quarter only to see Georgetown-Ridge Farm go on a 5-0 run to lead 16-8.

Falling behind seemed to up the energy of the Comets and they made a run of their own to go in front 18-17 with three minutes left in the half.

The two teams traded the lead for the remainder of the half, but it was the Buffs who led at intermission 24-22.

Jeremy Watson and Elliot triggered another Oakwood run to start the third quarter, tying the game at 26-all, but the Buffs responded with a last spurt to lead 29-28.

Then everything changed as Oakwood hit three treys in a row, one each by Brian Rice, Lee and Elliot to go up 39-31.

Georgetown-Ridge Farm tried to respond, but suddenly they went cold. They could not hit from beyond the arc nor from inside.

“That’s not a surprise to me,” said Buffs’ coach Adam Latoz. “We’ve been like that all year. Suddenly we struggle to find our offense. Some quarters we only score two or four points.”

His team did finally manage to put points on the board late in the quarter, but trailed 41-35 after three.

The Comets came out strong in the fourth quarter upping their lead to double digits in the first two minutes of the period.

The Buffs got a trey from Tyson Reed, but it was too little, too late as they could never close the game until the final minute.

Down ten, they cut the margin to four with 30 seconds left, but again cold shooting hurt them and they ended up losing 55-48.

“We got close all night,” said Latoz, “but we missed too many four-footers to win.”

The Comets move on to Wednesday’s semifinals, where they will take on top-seeded St. Joseph-Ogden.
