DANVILLE —
Where will the good fishing be this year throughout our area? I get this question every year and, unless they build some new lakes in our area, the answer remains about the same.
Anglers wanting to fish early need to look at the warm water discharge areas within our especially Newton Lake in Jasper County and the warm water discharge into the Wabash River just south of Cayuga, Ind. There are other warm water discharge lakes throughout the state but these two are fairly close to Danville.
There is no fish factory in our area quite like Mill Creek Lake south and west of Paris. This lake has been producing good bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish for quite a few years and it doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon. The drive to Mill Creek is not that far and the fishing there is fantastic.
East of Terre Haute, Ind. just off Route 70 is Richard Lieber State Park and Recreation Area. Within the area is Cataract Falls State Recreation Area is Cagles Mill Lake referred to as Cataract Lake.
I have always liked this 1,400 acre lake stocked filled with both largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, striped bass, channel catfish, as well as bluegill and crappie. This lake has unlimited horsepower on motors and is a great family lake. This is a great late spring, summer and fall lake.
Many area residents like Raccoon Lake (Cecil M. Harden Lake) near Rockville, Ind. for boating, fishing and camping and, there is a small lake, Rockville Lake just north and east of town. Both provide great fishing opportunities.
Lincoln Trails State Park south of Marshall has been a long time favorite of area residents especially for crappie and largemouth bass. This is a beautiful state park and offers some great early fishing.
I get calls quite often as to where a person should fishing in this area, especially people new to fishing or people that have just moved into the area.
Lake Vermilion and Lake Mingo are excellent lakes just close to Danville as are the ponds at Kickapoo State Park. I would recommend a person use a boat on any of these three areas and that you take advantage of the spring and fall stockings of trout at Clear Pond in Kickapoo.
The one thing Kennekuk Cove County Park north and west of Danville offers are many nice ponds for anglers to wet a line in without using a boat.
These ponds are stocked and provide a great place to just go out and experience fishing.
Fish often; it is so easy to get lost in today’s world!
