Are the Cornjerkers the best high school sports mascot in the country?
USA Today High School Sports is letting the fans choose the best high school sports mascot in the country and the moniker for Hoopeston Area High School is one of five finalists in the state of Illinois.
The Cornjerkers are competing against the Centralia Orphans, the Cobden Appleknockers, the Polo Marcos and the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes. The contest started on Monday and the voting will continue until 2 p.m. next Tuesday.
Each state winner will then advance in the second round where they will compete against five other state winners. The regional round will begin on March 6 and end on March 14.
The regional winners will then compete from March 15-25 for the National honor and the first-place prize of $2,000 for the school’s athletics department. Second place will be awarded $1,000, third ($500), fourth ($250) and fifth ($100).
