Attica prepares for Seeger

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — Over the past 15 years the Seeger Patriots have a 17-3 record against the Attica Red Ramblers including a 32-20 win last season.

The Ramblers will look to take the first step towards evening out that record this week when they take on the Patriots in a key Wabash River Conference match-up.

Attica (1-1) is coming off a loss to Clinton Prairie but one positive in the game was the Ramblers got another huge effort from Jarrett Smart who rushed for 151 yards. He will be counted on to come up big again this week.

“Jarrett has had a really good start to the season,’’ Attica coach Ryan Good said. “In two games he has rushed for a total of 364 yards and made 27 tackles on defense. Jarrett is a key part of our team on both sides of the ball not only as a play maker but as a team leader as well.”

Good felt there were two main keys for his offense and defense.

“We will have to stay poised and execute our plays,’’ he said. “We know the Seeger defense will bring a lot of pressure and we will have to deal with that.

“On defense, we will have to get off the line well and swarm to the ball while remaining focused on Brandon Ruemler and Seeger’s other key offensive threats.”

The Patriots (1-1) are coming off a 49-27 loss to North Montgomery.

Seeger will be looking to eliminate the big plays that plagued them against the Chargers. Defensive coordinator Tom Cook was quoted after that game as saying head coach Rob Beckett gave one of the of the greatest speeches he had ever heard as he challenged his squad to play with a greater team effort. Cook also said after the game he expected the team to respond this week.

In other action, the North Vermilion Falcons (2-0) will be looking for their first 3-0 start since 2005 when they travel to Covington to face the Trojans (1-1).

The series is deadlocked at 9-9 over the past fifteen years.

“This is the best Covington team I’ve seen in quite sometime,’’ North Vermilion coach Ernie Simpson said. “Phil Cunningham and his staff have done a wonderful job to change the culture surrounding Trojan football and this is a team on the right track.

“Our offensive will have to deal with their ability to play team defense and fly to the ball. Karson Allen is a handful as a sophomore nose tackle and is an impressive player. They have big physical linebackers in Cody Leaver and Justin Wheeler, and they can apply pressure from the edge. They are experienced and athletic in the secondary and due a nice job in run support.”

On defense Simpson felt the key would be making adjustments.

“To a certain degree you pick your poison with the Covington offense,’’ he said. “They give you multiple formations and have a variety of weapons including Nick Paris, Brice Peyton, Tanner Coffing and Brent Lopez, who has looked amazing early. They have so much firepower that it will be tough to account for everything they are capable of doing.”

The Trojans are coming off a loss to Rockville and will look to build off their positive effort in that game.

“We played hard, but just made to many mistakes,’’ Covington coach Phil Cunningham said. “I am pleased with how well our kids responded to their evaluations from that game and their desire to work to get better, That shows their dedication to being successful.”

Cunningham felt the key on offense was the play of the line and on defense containing Falcons quarterback Dalton McCool.

“We will have to do a good job upfront dealing with their various fronts and blitzes,’’ he said. “They have an aggressive defense that does a good job of putting pressure on the quarterback. They do a lot of things on offense and McCool is a really good player. We will have to contain him as well as playing fast and aggressive defense overall.”

The Fountain Central Mustangs, coming off an explosive 54-0 win over Turkey Run, travel to Riverton Parke to face the Panthers (1-1).

The Mustangs (1-1) won last year’s sectional game 52-7 and own a 17-4 record against the Panthers over the last 15 years.

All three games are scheduled for 7 p.m. (Eastern) kickoffs.
