Speakers win Storm Club for first time

CINCINNATI —  The record books for the Danville Post 210 Speakers are getting another new entry.

Earlier this summer, Tyler McKenzie set a new Post 210 home run mark and he continues to add to that mark.

But on Monday, the Speakers did something that no other Post 210 team has ever done.

Danville (28-6) claimed the Cincinnati Storm Club Tournament title with an 8-4 victory over the host Cincinnati Storm. Earlier in the day, Post 210 advanced into the title game with a 5-1 win over the Anderson Heat.

“I don’t know that this group realizes just how big this is for Post 210,’’ Danville manager Adam Decker said. “I can remember pitching in the 1994 championship game and the Storm beat us 3-0.

“We have brought some really great teams over here and we’ve come away with about four or five second-place finishes in the past 10 years.’’

Just like its first two days in Cincinnati, Danville used a high-powered offense to win both games on Monday and claim the title.

The only difference was that Post 210 bunched its offense together in three innings on Monday with a five-run fifth in the win over the Anderson Heat, highlighted by McKenzie’s three-run homer.

Than in the championship game, the Speakers scored five times in the first and three more in the second.

Zane Dillion, who had 10 hits in the tournament, picked up a pair of singles, while Cody Burton and Casey Fletcher each had a single and a double for Post 210. Drew Guthrie had the big blow with a three-run homer in the contest.

Cash Kiser got the win in the title game, while Aaron Lewellyn got the win in the contest with Anderson and he pitched the final two innings of the title game.

Post 210 is scheduled to be back in action tonight with a 6 p.m. contest against Terre Haute at Garfield Park.
