Trojans smash Panthers

COVINGTON, Ind. — Chandler Spring scored 21 points, with five 3-pointers, to lead Covington to a 49-23 win over Riverton Parke.

The Trojans led 6-4 midway through the first quarter but then they started to hit from beyond the arc.

Jordan Ahrens got things going with the first 3-pointer then Spring hit three of them in a row to give Covington an 18-4 lead.

Brendon Bovair stopped the run with a trey for the Panthers at the horn, but Spring came back with one more as the second quarter started, making it 21-7.

The Trojans followed up with a 10-4 run to lead 30-11 at the half.

Riverton Parke managed to get through the Covington defense twice in the third quarter and also hit a 3-pointer, but for the rest of the period, the Trojans threw a shutout.

“I like how we played defense for all 32 minutes,” said Covington coach Kent Chezem. “We talk in practice about defensive intensity and I think we’re beginning to be more consistent in doing it.”

Leading 41-18 going into the final quarter, Covington once again found the range from long distance.

Travis Coleman and Spring opened the period with three-pointers to make it 47-18. Chezem started subbing in some of his reserve players and the scoring slowed down for the Trojans.

Both teams began to foul late in the game and eventually each got to the line in the double bonus. That is usually a plus, but neither team was able to do much from the line, as Covington was 8-for-17 while Riverton Parke was only 2-for-8.

In the final five minutes of the contest, the Trojans scored two and the Panthers added five as the game ended 49-23.

Chezem said that while his team is 7-3 after starting 0-2, he still believes his team has work to do.

“I think we’re doing better defensively,” he said, “but we need to improve on offense.”

Asked what he wanted to see, the coach said, “We’re so aggressive on defense that we’re a little out of control at times on offense. You want that aggressiveness, but you also have to realize offense is about rhythm and timing and it’s hard to slow down.”

With the win, Covington moves to 2-1 in the Wabash River Conference, a game and a half behind league-leading Fountain Central. Their next game is at home next Friday against Rockville, a team who has yet to play a WRC game.

“If there’s ever a game that’s a measuring stick, that will be it,” said Chezem of the upcoming contest. “They’re ranked number one in the state in 1A, so we’ll find out a lot in that game. We’ll just see how it goes.”
