ROUNDUP: Speakers easily win in first game of district tourney

PARIS —  After losing their final regular season game, the Danville Post 210 Speakers woke up in a big way on Tuesday.

The Speakers started District 18 Tournament play with a 29-5 win over Toledo in seven innings.

“We came out ready to play today,” Danville coach Adam Decker said. “It is great to see how playing with the right approach can do and I hope it continues.”

The Speakers scored 14 runs in the first inning and cruised from there for the win.

Chuckie Robinson had two home runs, including a grand slam, to pick up eight RBIs for Post 210, while Tyler McKenzie had five, Zane Dillon and Drew Guthrie each had three, Michael Grant, Cash Kiser, Blake Janesky and Aaron Lewellyn each had two and Casey Fletcher and winning pitcher Cody Burton each had one. McKenzie, Lewellyn and Robinson each had four hits while Dillon, Burton, Grant and Guthrie each had three.

The Speakers are 30-8 and will face either Kansas or Paris in action today at 5:30 p.m.

DACC hires Bent, Dalton

DANVILLE — Danville Area Community College athletics director Tim Bunton stepped down as the school’s baseball coach on Tuesday.

Bunton, who was 421-358 in 15 seasons with the Jaguars will be replaced by Michael Dalton, an assistant with last year’s team.

Dalton is a native of Montpelier, Ind., and he was a four-year letterwinner at Huntington University.

Also on Tuesday, Bunton announced that women’s head basketball coach Stacey White has left DACC for a job at Lincoln Trail College.

Immediately taking over the Jaguars women’s basketball program will be Kyle Bent, who coached the University of Illinois women’s club team a year ago.

Bent is a native of Camp Point and he is a graduate of Illinois.
