DANVILLE —
Led by the pitching of Blake Janesky and fueled by an opportunistic offense the Danville Post 210 Speakers rebounded from a rare loss Tuesday in a big way Wednseday with a 9-1 win over Rantoul Post 287.
Janesky went five innings for the win allowing two hits while striking out four and walking none.
He faced the minimum of 12 batters through the first four innings with only former Armstrong-Potomac standout Tyler Davis reaching base on an error. He was thrown out trying to reach second on the play.
Casey Fletcher threw three innings in relief allowing one run, with Tyler McKenzie throwing a scoreless ninth to finish off the game.
Michael Grant led the way offensively going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and reaching base four times. Cash Kiser, Zane Dillon, and Joe Pratt had two hits each while McKenzie walked three times.
“Following 11 strikeouts looking in the loss to Terre Haute the biggest key tonight was that for the most part we moved the ball and let the game come to us,’’ Danville Post 210 manager Adam Decker said. “You come to expect Blake to have good outings after all this time and he threw strikes tonight which gave us a chance to get out to a lead. Fletcher did what he does, McKenzie threw a nice inning and our all-around pitching was solid tonight.”
The Speakers put up six runs in the bottom of the second inning and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.
Chuckie Robinson got things started with one of the Speakers nine walks in the game and scored on a fielder’s choice from Cash Kiser. A second run would score on an error. Aaron Lewellyn had an RBI walk, with the final three runs scoring on a passed ball and another Rantoul error.
McKenzie would have an RBI walk in the fourth followed by an run-scoring single from Grant that made the score 8-0. Grant would also account for the Speakers final run with a single in the sixth
“Michael Grant has earned playing time by the way he plays the game,’’ Decker said. “He comes to the park ready to play every day and never takes an inning or an at-bat off. He is always business during a game and somehow always finds away to contribute to the team.”
Rantoul would score their lone run in the eighth.
The Speakers improve to 29-7 with the win and they close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Kansas at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Danville Stadium.
“We have played 36 games since the 4th of June and at this point really what we need is some time off,’’ Decker said. “We had a good defensive effort tonight and everyone is healthy. Buy, myself included, we all need a break.
“We have a lot of quality arms and no one has been pushed. We feel good heading into district play.”
Saturday’s scheduled game at Paris has been cancelled.
