WESTVILLE — Led by the scoring of Hillary Lively and Bethany Chew, the North Vermillion Falcons continued their fast start to the season on Thursday with a 62-28 road victory over the Westville Tigers.
Lively led all scorers with 22 points and Chew added 17 as the Falcons improved to 4-0 on the season.
Kayla Bryant led the way for the Tigers with 10 points with Taylor Ceader adding eight.
Fueled by their pressure defense the Falcons got out to a 10-0 lead to start the game.
“We try to get out fast whenever we can,” said Falcons coach Terry Naylor. “If we think we can successfully apply pressure we will and it caused a lot of turnovers that led to points early and throughout the game.”
Lacee Cottrell would get the Tigers on the board nearly three minutes into the game and Bryant scored on a put back right before the buzzer sounded but the Falcons still led 19-6 after one quarter.
Lively would score 11 of her points in the opening period.
“We like to have Hillary come out on the floor because she can take most players off the dribble,” said Naylor. “I would have liked to have seen her be more aggressive at times tonight, but overall I was happy with her play.”
Bryant would then quickly score the opening two baskets of the second quarter, but that would prove to be half of the Tigers’ total for the period.
Capped by a three from Kylee West, the Falcons matched their first quarter point total and went to the half up 38-14.
“We continued to capitalize on turnovers,” Naylor said. “I was very happy with our second quarter play.”
The Tigers had their best stretch of the game in the third period, holding the Falcons scoreless for two minutes and outscoring them 12-8.
“We have had big leads before and not gotten flat but we got flat tonight,” said Naylor. “We played some junior varsity kids in the second half which changed the tempo for us and limited some of what we could do because they weren’t completely familiar with what we were running.”
The Falcons would rebound with a 16-2 fourth quarter to close out the game.
“After I called a timeout in the fourth quarter, we seemed to see the floor better for the rest of the game,” Naylor said. “We started making better transitions and overall played better.
“Bethany Chew hit some shots tonight after getting out to a slow shooting start and she had a great performance. Penetrating the lane is key to her game. Taylor Poynter also had a nice game for us. I couldn’t be happier with our start to the season.”
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday with a home game against Turkey Run.
Tigers coach Britney Kramer saw the game as a learning experience.
“It’s early in the season and we have a lot to work on,” she said. “We had a very physical game Tuesday against Villa Grove and this was another very physical game tonight.
“We will put this one behind us, go on, and get ready for the challenge of all the games in Oakwood.”
The Tigers (0-2) next play on Saturday in the Comet Classic. They will play Urbana University High at 10:30 a.m.
