Forman close to glory

DANVILLE — Eddie Clark and Clowzell Adams love picking on the third member of their defensive backfield — MykeTez Forman.

You see, Clark and Adams have combined for 10 interceptions this season and each one of them have a defensive touchdown.

Forman hasn’t been as fortunate. As a matter of fact, the 5-foot-9, 155-pound senior has accounted for one turnover this season.

“We give him a hard time, but we don’t put him down,’’ said Adams, who has five interceptions and 15-yard interception return for a touchdown against Mattoon. “If MykeTez plays his game, he will get one when we need it.’’

Forman has gotten plenty of opportunities this season as he lead the Danville defense with 23 pass break-ups, Clark is second on the team with 14.

“That shows that I’ve been close,’’ Forman said. “I just haven’t been able to catch one yet.

“It’s really not that important to get an interception as long as you are covering your guy and breaking up the passes. But, you really want to get one.’’

The combination of Adams, Clark and Forman are a big reason why the Danville defense is allowing just 92.2 yards per game passing this season.

“If I shut down my side and Tez shuts down his side, there is not a lot a team can do against us,’’ Adams said.

This Saturday when the Danville Viking (12-0) host the New Lenox Providence Catholic Celtics (11-1) in a Class 6A semifinal, the trio of Adams, Clark and Forman will be making their 23rd consecutive start together as a unit.

“It’s a definite plus to have veteran guys in your defensive secondary,’’ Danville coach B.J. Luke said. “MykeTez has been picked on a lot and he has held up very well. He is a great cover corner and he does a numerous of other things for the team. He is just an overall good football player.’’

Forman, who was the Big 12 all-conference kick returner as a junior, has added kicking to his repertoire this season.

He got thrust into those duties in the final seconds of the Vikings season opener when he split the uprights with a game-winning 28-yard field goal with no time on the clock to beat Bloomington 30-28.

“That kick got things started for this team,’’ Clark said. “We wouldn’t be undefeated right now without MykeTez making that kick.’’

Forman was actually the substitute kicker that night as Malcolm Anderson missed a 34-yarder with time running out, but a running into the kicker penalty gave the Vikings another chance. Anderson had been injured and Forman, who did handle kickoff duties, had to come into the game cold.

“It was pressure, but it really wasn’t,’’ he said. “Coach told me to just keep my head down and follow through. I did what he said and I just barely made it.’’

If the Vikings had lost that game, Danville would be traveling this weekend to New Lenox to play Providence Catholic.

“That definitely was a big kick, it’s given us home-field advantage this week,’’ Luke said. “MykeTez has also gotten better as the year has gone on.

“He has gotten a lot more proficient on the kickoffs and he is more consistent with the extra points.’’

In the past four weeks, Forman is 11-of-15 on extra-point attempts and he booted a 28-yard field goal in the 30-20 win over Oak Lawn Richards on Nov. 7.

“I do it for the team,’’ he said. “I will play wherever the coaches need me to play.’’

Luke points out that Forman has also been a key contributor on Danville kickoff and punt return units.

“It’s quite evident with him and Eddie back there, not many teams have kicked to us all year,’’ Luke said. “We’ve had excellent field position all year because of the short kicks.’’

Forman is averaging 23.1 yards a kickoff return and he has a 71-yard return for a touchdown in Danville’s win over Decatur Eisenhower. Additionally, he has 19 punt returns this season, averaging 6.1 yards an attempt.

“I’ve gotten a return for a touchdown, now all I need is an interception return for a score to get even with Eddie and Clowzell,’’ he said.

Forman admits that his main concern this Saturday will be finding a way to stop the Providence Catholic Celtics in the Class 6A Semifinal at Ned Whitesell Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m., with gates opening at 1 p.m.

A community-wide pep rally for the Danville Vikings is being held tonight in Temple Plaza at 6 p.m.

The Band of Vikings, the Danville High cheerleaders and pompettes will also be there.
