Local Roundup: Vikes fall to Railsplitters

STAFF REPORT

LINCOLN — Three Danville football players got onto the basketball court on Wednesday night.

Their presence was very much welcomed by their Viking teammates, but it still wasn’t quite enough to get that first victory.

After falling to top-ranked Champaign Centennial on Monday night (91-75), Danville suffered a 69-54 loss to the No. 2-rated Lincoln Railsplitters on Wednesday.

“I was encouraged,’’ Danville coach Gary Tidwell said. “We have a lot of potential, and getting those three guys back on the court was a positive step.’’

Junior point guard D’Lando Carter had his second big scoring game, leading the Vikings with 20 points, while junior forward Joey Robinson had 16.

Those two are averaging 44 points per game for Danville (0-2).

“I’m really happy with the consistency from D’Lando and Joey early on,’’ Tidwell said.

Keaton Britt, Jaron Cunningham and Dennis Hightower playing in their first games since the end of the football season combined for 9 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

Tidwell admits it will take a little while for those guys to get their basketball legs.

Up next for the Danville Vikings are the Rochester Rockets (0-2) in a 5:30 p.m. contest in Lincoln on Friday.

Joining Learnard in double digits for Salt Fork (3-0) was Ryan Anderson with 14 and Jake Manning had 10.
