LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dashers fall in Game 1

DAYTON, Ohio — The Danville Dashers tried to go goal for goal with the Dayton Demonz in Friday’s first game of the Federal Hockey League’s Western Conference finals but could not get the win in a 7-5 defeat.

The Dashers scored the first two goals of the game by Billy Hunt and Philippe St.-Laurent but Dayton score four goals in a row to take a 4-2 lead midway through the second period.

Dustin Skinner would get two goals late in the period to tie things up at 4-4 entering the third period. Dayton scored before Jonathan Juliano tied things up again at 5-5 but the Demonz would pull away.

Justin Barr had two assists while James Gordon, Ryan Stern, Craig Cole and David Lun each had one for Danville and Justin Sand had 28 saves in goal.

The two teams will play again tonight in Game 2 of the series at 6:35 p.m.

Local players advance in shootout


Danville’s Devyn McGuire, Hoopeston Area’s Brennan Crose and Chrisman’s John Porter will extend their seasons to next week.

McGuire advanced in the Boys Class 4A Long distance shootout by being one of the top shooters before Friday’s regional title game at Normal. McGuire will go to the Pekin sectional next week to try to advance to the state competition.

For Crose and Porter, they advanced to the state competition before sectional title games. Crose will go in Class 2A after hitting eight shots at Tolono Unity and Porter will advance in Class 1A after making it out of the Schlarman sectional.

Both of them will start preliminary action on Thursday.
