Trojans no match for Rox

CAYUGA, Ind. — Rockville claimed its third boys basketball sectional in a row on Saturday, riding 20 points from senior Lane Mahurin to a 51-31 win against Covington in Sectional 53.

The Rox (25-0) led from start to finish, distancing themselves from the Trojans 13-8 in the first quarter and leading by double digits most of the rest of the game.

Covington (14-8) missed its first four shots and didn’t get a field goal for the first 5 minutes, 50 seconds of the game. Meanwhile, Rockville fed the ball to Mahurin, who scored eight in the first quarter off post-ups, spins to the basket and baseline jumpers.

Covington hung within two possessions of the Rox until back-to-back 3-pointers by Rockville’s Jordan McFall and Nick Waltz extended the margin to 12 points.

Mahurin’s dominance and Rockville’s poise and experience led them to the win, Covington coach Kent Chezem said.

“He’s as dominant a player for his team as anyone I’ve ever coached against,” Chezem said. “He makes everyone else on his team better.”

Turnovers (12) and poor shot selection (40 percent from the field) hampered Covington all night. Despite being down 12 points at the half, Chezem said he felt the Trojans were still in the game.

“I thought we had a legitimate chance,” he said. “They don’t take a bad shot, and they rarely turn the ball over.”

The Trojans spread scoring around among Chandler Spring (nine points), James Foley (eight), Alex Frechette (seven) and Jordan Ahrens (six).

That combination was on Rockville coach Dave Mahurin’s radar during the entire tournament.

“We knew that Covington would be a tough out,” Dave Mahurin said. “They’re the team we feared in the sectional.”

Rockville moves on to the Tri-Central regional to play against Lafayette Central Catholic.
