LOCAL ROUNDUP: DHS track teams break records

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —  The Danville High boys and girls track teams broke two school records and tied another at the Hoosier Relays.

In the girls competition, the 1,600-meter relay team of Alexis Hoskins, Emone Davis, Lashay Grubbs and Alexus Jimson-Miller took more than 2 seconds of the school’s previous best.

Their winning time was 4:05.86 and the previous record was 4:08.45.

Jimson-Miller wound up taking first in four events on Thursday, as she won the 55 dash (7.41), the 55 hurdles (8.26) and she was also on Danville’s 800 relay team.

Davis, who was also on the 800 relay team, was third in the 55 dash (7.53).

Tying her own school record was Ambrosia Williams in the pole vault. She set the mark at 9 feet last Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind., and she duplicated that performance on Thursday, taking second in the event.

Also getting a top-five finish in the 30-team event at Purdue University was Michaela Jones taking fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 5½ inches. Aariona Graham was sixth (15-11).

On the boys side, the Danville distance medley team set a school record on Thursday at Lambert Fieldhouse. Complete results on the boys competition was available at press time.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

DACC wins two

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Danville Area Community College baseball team poured on the hits on Thursday, getting 20 hits in two games.

The Jaguars got 10 hits in their 6-1 win over Owens Community College and 10 more in a 5-2 win over Lansing Community College.

Against Owens, Pete Strommen and Aaron Gardner each had one RBI for DACC, who also took advantage of four errors and two wild pitches. Zach Anderson got the win, going six innings with three strikeouts and only gave up two hits.

Strommen and Aaron Kuper each had one RBI in the first inning against Lansing to set a pace the Jaguars would not lose. Kuper added another RBI along with Patrick Cottrell and Caleb Etchison.

Noe Arteaga got the win on the mound, going five innings with five strikeouts and only gave up two hits.

The Jaguars are 6-1 and will end their season-opening trip today with a game against Westmoreland.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Porter, Crose fall short

PEORIA — Chrisman’s John Porter and Hoopeston Area’s Brennan Crose each participated in the preliminary round of the state Three-Point Shootout and could not advance to the final round.

Porter only made six shots in his first round in Class 1A— tied for last in his group — while Crose made eight shots, just one shot away from being part of a tie for a spot in Class 2A. If he was part of a tie, Crose would have participated in another shootout for the final spot.

Danville’s Devyn McGuire will be competing in sectional action tonight at Pekin for an opportunity to go to the Class 4A state shootout.
